The event Green Screen: Digital Rights and Climate Justice brought together around 50 people in Berlin to discuss how tackling climate change also depends on a sustainable and equitable Internet. The activity was promoted by Mozilla Foundation, Ariadne Network, ISOC, Mercator, and Ford Foundation.
Research-driven discussions centered around four points: policy and advocacy, disinformation and climate misinformation, open practices, and norms and governance.
Harriet Kingaby and Lori Regattieri, founder of Ecomídia, facilitated the panel “Climate misinformation and misinformation”, which reflected on how misinformation is negatively impacting the fight against the climate crisis. Those present sought to analyze the status quo of global disinformation actors, and identify pathways to healthy media environments.
“Whether it's paid for by the fossil fuel industry, public relations campaigns, greenwashing, climate skepticism, distraction, mayhem strategies, or targeted harassment of climate activists - what is clear is that misinformation delays climate action, and that real solutions are urgently needed”, highlight the mediators in the event report.
