the platform eco-media: Technology in times of socio-environmental climate emergency will be launched on June 2nd at the Brazilian Internet Forum (FIB). The event, since 2011, has been debating the consolidation and expansion of the Internet in Brazil. Eco-media will be presented during the panel “Digital rights and socio-environmental climate justice: Technologies, internet and community practices”, a partnership of the project with the Popular Audiovisual Center (CPA) and Fundação Escola Bosque (Belém City Hall). You can watch the panel at the link:
Eco-media, developed with the support of Mozilla Foundation, is a platform for people interested in communication technologies, digital rights and socio-environmental climate justice. According to Lori Regattieri, founder of the initiative, the platform “focuses on collaboration with other organizations and the development of research, workshops and applications that are useful to the socio-environmental community”.
The project seeks to influence the debate on technology and socio-environmental climate justice, with special attention to the role of algorithms that work against the voices of historically marginalized populations and groups in Brazil.
To this end, one of its strong points is a tool that facilitates access to information publicly available on social networks by the socio-environmental community. In simpler terms, the Eco-media Panel works as a filter for public information produced by relevant socio-environmental actors and available on social networks. “Our panel explores new interface designs through data from social networks, but without accessing personal and/or private data of any kind”, explains Lori.
In practice, Eco-media helps to make visible voices that fight for climate justice and have historically been invisible.
